A Long, Long Time Ago

I remember a lovely weekend fighter practice in Bjornsborg (San Antonio) in 1981, when, like in Oklahoma!, the ladies had brought picnic lunches, and the men bid on the lunches, and also the pleasure of lunching with the lady who'd brought them. I was 18 or 19, and while, as a transient student at Lackland AFB, I had no thought of romance, one lady's lunch sounded like the best to me. Too, this lady was way out of my league. But I bid on her lunch. And in very short order, I found myself bidding against another fellow who seemed determined to beat me, but also seemed uncomfortable that the price might be going higher than he could afford. I didn't know very many people very well, and so I asked him if she was his lady. Well, it turned out that she wasn't, but he was hoping to make her so. So I withdrew from the bidding, and they shared some of the lunch with me. This was back before any of us had awards of arms.

After that, the two of them, Emrys and Brianna, were inseparable. Until today.

Brianna passed on today, I hear. She was very beautiful, and very gracious, and very intelligent. We all know that she was for a time Baroness of the Barony of Bjornsborg, but I remember when she was a fighter (King Dinaris, as I recall, awarded Sable Falcons to Brianna and (now-Duchess-Sir) Rowan at the same time; I think they were the first female recipients).

My prayers are for the repose of my friend's soul, and the consolation of all who loved her, especially my brother Knight, Sir Emrys.

Border Skirmish Cancelled

If you were planning to attend the Border Skirmish between the Midrealm and Northshield this weekend, don't!
Greetings to the loyal friends of the Griffon and Dragon,

It is with a heavy heart that the Autocrats of Border Skirmish V, set to start today and run through Sunday, inform you that the event is cancelled due to heavy rains last night at the campsite. There is between 2-4 inches of standing water all over the fields. We were hoping that the weather would hold and the event could continue as planned but Mother Nature has decided against that. The skirmish between the Kingdoms of Northshield and the Midrealm has been put on hold for our lands to dry from the wet. We are sorry for the last minute notice to you all.

We ask the populace of the Known World to help spread the word of the event being cancelled to as many lists as we can.

We are hoping to reschedule the Border Skirmish event for a later time in the summer/fall. We will send correspondence in regards to a new date as soon as we can.

Thank you for your understanding and we hope to see you at Border Skirmish V later in the year. If anyone has any questions either of the autocrats would be happy to help you. Their contact info is below:

The New Quest

SCA Knight seeks elective office!

In my 20 years as an SCA knight, I've spent a lot of time reflecting on the meaning of knighthood, the responsibilities of chivalry, and just where to draw the line between seeking to live my ideals in the SCA and living them 24/7.

It seems to me that unless you're incorporating the ideals of chivalry into your "real" life, your non-SCA regular life, then what you do in the SCA is just an act. That may make it easier, but it certainly makes it less real.

And it seems to me also that the primary duty of a knight, of anyone who tries to live up to the code of chivalry, is to defend the weak.

In the SCA, it's pretty much taboo in most times and places to discuss mundane politics, and that's probably as it should be.

But I've come to the conclusion that a set of circumstances which have arisen which compell me to seek elective office in the State of Illinois. I am going to be an independent candidate for State Representative, in the 62nd district.
